After 30 years of maintaining and promoting Canarian rural craft traditions, the annual Pinolere Craft Fair near La Orotava is celebrating its own milestone from 4 to 6 September – and everyone is invited.
Basket case has never been such a complimentary term. Cestoria is the art of basket weaving and nimble fingers of all ages will gather at the ethnographic village high above Puerto de la Cruz. The setting is spectacular, nestling in the foothills of the La Orotava valley, the vineyards as you approach the showground are just a taster for the overflowing stalls of produce. This year’s bumper crop features 200 artisans displaying wares as diverse as sweets, pipes, cigars, cheese, biscuits, wine, and meat from locally reared goats, sheep, pigs, and cows.
The international flavour has grown over the years, last year 30 countries were represented among the home grown exhibitors. Pinolere normally has a population of around 700 but during the three day event upwards of 40,000 people will be drawn in.
There are plenty of food stalls, the burgers and hot dogs are a cut above the usual fast food outlets with locally sourced meat accompanied by vegetables and spices from barely a breeze away. Expect to have a full bag of shopping by the time you leave, wine, cakes, and sweets are always popular reminders of the day.
The skills and crafts taught all year round in the village museum will also be on display at the 10,000 square metre site. Hand to hand combat with ‘juego del palo’ sticks and ravine leaping with ‘salto del pastor’ are among the more extreme demonstrations, the dancing and local folk music is much more soothing. The three terraced sections are a bit exposed and even once the early low cloud has cleared you may be grateful for that pullover.
Rural tourism and walking holidays have increased dramatically in recent years as visitors swap hotels and apartments for converted farms and camp sites and Pinolere offers an insight into a less commercialized way of life.
It’s a steep drive up narrow lanes to the showground and although there is a decent amount of parking areas, they tend to fill up quickly so an early arrival is a good idea. Just don’t expect a quick getaway. Buses will be running from the La Orotava bus station at roughly hourly intervals.
