Where Christmas Eve on Tenerife can be a quiet, family affair…away from the British bars in the resorts at least, New Year is a completely different animal. The clock chiming midnight is a signal to dress up to the nines, bid farewell to 2011, toast the arrival of 2012 and party till dawn.
What form that partying takes depends on where you are staying in Tenerife and whether you prefer your revelling al fresco or in the warmth of a cosy bar or club.
Open Air New Year’s Eve Parties on Tenerife
These are my personal choice of the most electric places to welcome in the New Year but you have to be staying in a traditional town to experience the best.
In Santa Cruz, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Candelaria, Los Cristianos, El Médano, Los Gigantes and La Caleta in Costa Adeje, there are open air parties with live bands, fireworks and an infectious fiesta atmosphere.
In the traditional Canarian towns the music is Latino and the vibe is more like a South American scene than a Spanish. Sexy salsa and merengue moves making us northern Europeans feel decidedly lacking in rhythm at these open air dance-marathons. In some places, like Puerto de la Cruz, there’s also a funfair, but a ride on the big wheel after a few bottles of cava probably isn’t recommended. The churro stalls that accompany the funfair, however, are worth a visit to help soak up the alcohol.
You can’t be too dressed up at these affairs. It’s evening gowns and DJs galore from teens to tottering abuelas. If you’re Scottish, the kilt is perfect for these events.
Bars & Clubs on Tenerife at New Year
Because the open air parties are mainly put on for the Canarian population, you don’t tend to find them or the same community atmosphere in the purpose built resorts. That doesn’t mean anyone staying in these doesn’t get to enjoy a New Year party. There are loads of parties to choose from in the resorts. A lot of the British bars in Playa de las Amèricas, Costa Adeje, Golf del Sur and Costa del Silencio have special New Year’s Eve party nights with live entertainment, buffets, party bags and free cava at midnight. Some of these are ticket only affairs, so it’s a good idea to decide where you’re going to spend NYE and make sure you book your place at the party.
Tenerife’s clubs tend to pull out all the stops for their New Year parties. Everyone knows that the area around Veronicas and Starcos offers hot nightspots for younger visitors but there are excellent clubs all over Tenerife with venues such as Faro Chill Art in Puerto Colón, Vampis in Puerto de la Cruz, the Buho Club in La Laguna and a saudade in Santa Cruz good choices for clubbing the New Year away Tenerife style.
