The Best New Year’s Eve Firework Displays on Tenerife

Fri, December 5th, 2014 - By Jack Montgomery

There’s something special about seeing the old year off by popping Champagne corks (or cava in this case) and watching a spectacular firework display.

Fireworks, Orotava Valley, Tenerife

It’s a thrilling and colourful combination that fills the air with happiness and hope. No matter how many times we’ve seen firework displays, they still hold the power to unlock childlike emotions of delight. On Tenerife good ones reduce a multi-national audience to the same language consisting of a couple of words – ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’.

New Year’s Eve wouldn’t seem complete without a firework display.

On 31 December, revellers have to go out of their way, or never leave whatever bar they’ve ensconced themselves in, to avoid seeing spectacular pyrotechnic action on Tenerife. Nearly every town and village holds a display, as do some hotels.

Where we live, in the Orotava Valley, we can watch numerous displays at the same time, spinning in a 360 degree arc to see where has the best fireworks.

Basically, Tenerife does firework displays exceptionally well. Whether you’re staying in a purpose built resort or traditional town, you won’t be far from a New Year’s Eve party and firework display.

These are some of the best ones near the most popular resorts.

Fireworks in Los Cristianos
The municipality of Arona holds its biggest New Year party in Los Cristianos. In the town there are live bands from 11pm, but the place to be at midnight is by the seafront to watch displays across Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.

Fireworks in Costa Adeje
One of the best open air New Year parties in south Tenerife is held in La Caleta in Costa Adeje. This one is so good it’s often televised on Spanish TV. Again there are live bands and DJs, with the party starting at 11pm. Normally the most traditional events in Adeje are held in the town of the same name in the hills, so this is a great opportunity to get a taste of authentic Tenerife within walking distance of some of the island’s most luxurious hotels.

Fireworks in El Médano
El Médano does traditions really well, the town being a nice balance between working town and resort. The party takes place in Plaza del Médano from 11pm.

Fireworks in Los Gigantes
The firework displays in Los Gigantes aren’t always up to the same standard as in other parts of the island, sometimes even relying on hotel displays. But there’s always a great little street party in Plaza Buganvilla in the centre of the resort. I should have been able to tell you more; however, the programme the local council published on their website is too small to read.

Fireworks in Puerto de la Cruz
There’s always a  lively bash in Puerto de la Cruz. Plaza del Charco is a wonderful setting for the live bands whilst the harbour is a charmer for the firework display. In Puerto the party starts at 10pm but hits its stride much later.

Fireworks in Santa Cruz
If you happen to be staying in Tenerife’s capital, head to Plaza de la Candelaria for the party which starts from 11pm.

To really celebrate Tenerife style, follow local traditions and make sure you’re dressed as though for the catwalk.
