A Video Glimpse into the Bizarre World of Tenerife Carnaval Parades

For the thousands of visitors who coincide their holiday to Tenerife with carnival dates, the parades are the main ingredient of their enjoyment. This year the Santa Cruz carnival attracted more than a quarter of a million spectators to its Cabalagata Anunciadora (opening parade) and its Coso Apoteosis (closing parade).

Both parades have participants from little to large and infant to pensioner and they feature a colourful variety of dancing troupes, singing clown groups known as Murgas, Carnival Queens and famous faces who make appearances every year, like Fidel Castro, Harpo Marx, Charlie Chaplin and Miss Piggy. Ever since Disney launched their blockbuster success, Pirates of the Caribbean, the streets have thronged with Captain Jack Sparrows but this year’s specimen was so uncannily like the real thing that we wondered if it wasn’t the real Johnny Depp taking advantage of carnival to adopt the perfect disguise – himself.

Lasting anything from two to four hours depending on how close to the start of the route you choose to be, watching carnival parades can be an exhausting business. But not for readers of the Tenerife Holidays blog who can just hit the forward arrow on this video and enjoy some of this year’s highlights. And don’t miss the tiny clockwork toddler towards the end – cute and bizarre in equal measure 🙂
