Tenerife Top Training, the Athletic Sphere

Wed, February 23rd, 2011 - By Colin

Jumpers for goals sounds pretty basic, but only a few years ago gravel pitches were fairly common in Tenerife. Things have moved forward and the biggest leap of all is the all purpose sports complex Tenerife Top Training in La Caleta where science is brought to bear on sporting endeavour.

Tradition still has a place as the full size natural grass pitch shows but it sits next to a FIFA approved artificial grass surface in equal size and even a specialist natural area set aside for goalkeepers to hone their skills. That and the sunshine break from mid season mud and frost would tempt most professional players but the really pampered mega stars want it all. Approaching the main entrance to T3 the 10 lane Olympic sized swimming pool and its smaller neighbour ripple gently as swimmers add a few lengths to perfectly executed entries from the starting blocks. In just 3 years since opening many medal winning swimmers have sharpened up their style here.

Injuries are the curse of sports people so the state of the art indoor swimming treadmill is a vital tool for mending and analysing performers. Swimming into adjustable jets of water video cameras capture weaknesses of muscle and technique for later correction. And where would they be without a gym, air assisted weight, workout machines that are as lean as their users hopes, and a sauna  and Turkish bath soothe the athlete.

It would be a crime to waste the sun so there’s a choice of 3 tennis courts and 7 courts to learn Padel, a popular local cross between tennis and squash. The sandy beaches of Costa Adeje are part of the panoramic view below and also home to the Spanish volleyball teams. For some more private net practice there is also a beach area on site at T3 and after all that hard work, the juice bar is a great place to relax and get more expert advice.
Although the likes of Manchester City and Warrington Wolves are among many professionals to have benefited from extended training here, it is very much open to the public and aspires to help sports fans of all levels.
