Tenerife Shopping At Recinto Ferial

Anyone who enjoys browsing the local markets on Tenerife for bargains hasn’t seen anything until they’ve experienced the mega-market that is Exposaldo at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz from the 9th to 13th May 2013.

Housed in an exhibition hall the size of several aircraft hangers pushed together, the Recinto Ferial was opened in 1996 and has become the venue for some of Tenerife’s most popular and well attended events, including the election of the Santa Cruz Carnaval Queen every year. But the event which attracts the most people over its five day duration is the vast flea market of Exposaldo.

Spread over two floors and spilling out onto the surrounding streets, Exposaldo consists of  140 companies and 200 individual booths selling goods at knock-down prices to somewhere in the region of 50,000 buyers. On the ground floor, hundreds of second hand vehicles are on display to be haggled and bargained over while upstairs, fashion, bedding, textiles, electrical goods, shoes, handbags, kitchenware, children’s toys and any number of other items I can’t now remember are on sale at anything up to half price.

The goods are old stock, end of line models, bankrupt stock, last season’s styles and generally in the ‘no longer top of the range’ category but they’re all kosher and brand new unless otherwise labelled.

Wandering the vast aisles is like visiting all the old street markets in a single outings, even down to the occasional vendor rallying everyone round to his booth to demonstrate his Magik dish cloth. It’s a feast for the eyes, a barrage for the ears and a huge temptation for the wallet.

Entrance to Exposaldo is just €3 and for that you gets you three vouchers worth €1 each and redeemable against any purchase over €10 – how’s that for your first bargain 🙂 There’s ample car parking in the car park itself and across the road for free. Getting there is easy too as it’s right on Avenida Constitución opposite Parque Marítimo.

And if flea markets aren’t your thing, how about the Natural Health Fair from 27th to 29th September showcasing everything to do with health and wellness from the latest miracle diet food and organic chocolate to Reiki and massages. Or maybe you’re planning to get hitched next year, in which case you’ll fall in love with the Wedding Fair from 30th November to 2nd December at which you can plan, buy and arrange every aspect of your Big Day from presents for the bridesmaids to a honeymoon in Tenerife…oh, wait a minute.
