What is Tenerife Like in October?

Mon, October 3rd, 2011 - By Jack Montgomery

October on Tenerife marks the beginning of the winter season…in terms of visitor patterns anyway. Weather wise it still feels like summer and, just like September, is a beautiful month to visit the island. As far as fiestas and events go, it’s one of the quietest months of the year but there’s still plenty of interesting things going on for intrepid visitors who manage to drag themselves away from their sun beds.

Weather on Tenerife in October
Weather in October is often like the best summer you could imagine in Britain; hot and sunny with almost perfect temperatures in the mid to upper 20s Centigrade. As it’s ‘autumn’ (tell that to the hordes on the beaches) it can signal the end of the dry season and the start of the period when rain is possible; although if any falls in October it’s usually light and short. It gets light around 8am and darkness falls around 8pm. However, that can vary by 15 to 20 minutes depending on where you’re staying as the north coast stays lighter slightly longer. Temperatures at night start to get a bit cooler as the month progresses but even then a light jumper or jacket may prove to be too hot.

How Busy is Tenerife in October?
There can be a 30% boost in visitors in October. Whilst there are still a decent amount of Spanish visitors (more noticeable in northern resorts like Puerto de la Cruz) October is the start of the Northern European season and the numbers of German, French, Belgian, Dutch and Scandinavian visitors increase. The biggest jump is amongst British tourists with Tenerife welcoming more than 40,000 extra sun hungry Brits than it received in September.

Fiestas on Tenerife in  October

Fiesta in Honour of Cristo de La Salud and Ntra Sra. del Rosario –  takes place in Arona, the administrative centre for the resorts of Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Las Galletas/Costa del Silencio. There are events (concerts, processions, fiesta queen elections) from the end of September through to the first week in October.

Fiestas in Adeje – can be experienced only a hop, skip and a jump from Tenerife’s popular resorts of Del Duque, Puerto Colón, Torviscas, Fañabe and San Eugenio in Costa Adeje. Events run from the end of September until mid October with the highlights being the folklore festival on the 11th and the romería (procession with music, animals and lots of food and wine) on the 12th.

La Librea – On the 8th in Valle de Guerra involves a naval battle (on land) between Muslims and Christians set to fireworks and music. It’s off the beaten track stuff…and mind-blowing.
