What is Tenerife Like in April?

Mon, April 2nd, 2012 - By Jack Montgomery

The change of seasons on Tenerife doesn’t just affect the weather. As temperatures rise on Tenerife, they also rise in northern parts and the island loses many of its winter residents giving the island a bit of a limbo feel in relation to visitors after Easter. But Easter also marks the end of the post carnival fiesta drought and, as the month progresses, lively fiestas and festivals bring a sense of awakening and a pre-summer buzz to the island.

Weather on Tenerife in April
Spring is generally a beautiful time to visit Tenerife with temperatures on the coast being around the mid 20s Celsius; perfect for sunbathing without being fried alive. There are usually some days when April showers fall but they don’t last long although there can also be cloudy spells. Last year’s Easter was dull and wet across Tenerife and more like a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK.

How Busy is Tenerife in April?
April is a bit of a change-over month in terms of visitor patterns. It’s busy right up to Easter week, then there’s a bit of a seasonal lull as the swallows (temporary winter residents) return to northern European shores for the summer. Although there are still over 300,000 visitors to Tenerife in April, there can be a noticeable difference in the number of people in bars and restaurants. The biggest drop is amongst people from Scandinavian countries. Easter visitors bump up the overall figures with sun-seekers from Britain and Spain showing an increase on March figures.

Fiestas on Tenerife in April
Easter is a sombre time on Tenerife with serious processions in most traditional towns. The biggest event is at La Laguna where hooded brotherhoods parade through the streets for the emotive and slightly unnerving Magna and Silent Processions on Good Friday. Equally emotive and interesting is The Passion in Adeje, just above the Costa Adeje resorts, when a good percentage of the town come over all Thespian to act out the last days of Jesus Christ. The sombre mood is cast off in Tegueste at the end of the month with the very lively, colourful and busy Romería de San Marcos (29t.h).

Concerts & Music Festivals on Tenerife in April
For a change most of the best musical events will be taking place in the south of Tenerife in April. For dance fans, the I Love Music Festival at Siam Park above Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas on the 6th is the perfect way to welcome in spring and summer at an open air rave in fabulous Thai themed surroundings. Costa Adeje is also the venue for another big event with the Magma Warm Up Festival, featuring Jeff Mills and a load of other DJs at the Magma Centre on the 7th. For dance of a completely different style head to Santa Cruz on the same day to relish the Moscow Ballet’s performance of Swan Lake at the Guimerá Theatre.

Yes I agree with the comments about Easter having a sombre feel in Tenerife but it all added to the experience for me. I was there for a couple of months last year, great holiday! I’d be happy to visit Tenerife any time of the year (specially as it gets me out of the rainy uk ha).
