The colourful cow doing its best Clint Eastwood impression stops a lot of people in their tracks outside Taurus, the latest addition to the Gourmet Land chain. Most are stabled at CC Americas Plaza in Playa de Las Americas, but this large restaurant is high above Los Cristianos in Oasis del Sur with great views over the new rooftop La Pepa food market, the old town and out to the ferry port.
On a hot evening, a friend and I chose the large open terrace to enjoy a cooling breeze within sight of the crackling charcoal grill inside. For starters I had deep fried camembert with a rich cranberry jam (€6.90), my mate dived straight in for barbecue ribs in a spicy diablo sauce (€7.50), they were both delicious. The menu also had a big range of salads, soups and tapas including squid, sardines, paella, mussels and buffalo wings.
As we awaited our main course I had a quick look around the side terrace overlooking the Hotel Paradise Park pool complex. This was a more intimate sun trap but both terraces have protective clear covers and heaters in case the evening turns chilly.
The barbecue featured grilled Argentinian and Spanish cuts of meat. I went for the fillet steak with Canarian potatoes (€15.90) and my mate took on a whopping T bone steak with mushroom sauce (€19.90), both served with garnish. They were very filling and the 3 to 4 weeks maturing process did its job well. I had a hot mojo sauce with mine but tested the mushroom sauce as well just to be thorough. They also had Ox loin, fillet, and rib steak on the menu, they’re on my list for next time but I could always be tempted by the fish. How about a black snapper, whole or as a fillet? The Italian influence was covered with a good range of pizzas and pasta.
In the far corner of the open terrace a small stage was being set for live music, there’s some every night. As football fans, we had already noticed that they show all the big games at the inside dining area which has a bright country kitchen look.
Tenerife summer nights are made for indulging in desserts so we browsed the menu and made some tough decisions. For my mate it was apple pie with cream but I had my adventurous head on and picked Argentinian pancakes filled with caramel cream and it oozed its way onto my pudding heaven list. It was a fine way to top off an excellent meal in a nice relaxed setting.
