So Sweet Puts the Cherry On The Top Of The Baking Boom

Unless you live the life of a hermit, television’s obsession with baking can’t have escaped you. You don’t have to be a so called celeb or create a cake like a cathedral to enjoy the craze. At So Sweet in Playa de las Americas they don’t just sell the cup cakes, muffins, and brownies to inspire you, they also have all the gadgets and equipment you need to get busy in your kitchen.

The red and white colour scheme complete with chandeliers and a settee with cake motif cushions should put you in the creative mood. The cup cakes at the counter evoked memories of my aunty’s prolific output of dainty fancies for Christmas, birthdays or any excuse she could think of. On this visit, the muffins seduced me; chunky and swelling out of their wrappers. I tried a red currant variety that burst open under a fork attack to reveal a fondant cream. Just so it didn’t feel lonely I also tried its blueberry friend which had the same crusty outside and crumbly interior.

In between coffee and cake I browsed the shelves inside, there were full kits to make macaroons and other taste bombs. The Swiss roll kit looked like even a kitchen pest like me might have a chance of producing something worth savoring. For those who have already mastered the art of cake making So Sweet also have lots of handy toppings including files of ‘ball bearings’ and  natural fruit flavours to add to a mix such as strawberry, coconut, and caramel. Icing bags of various shapes and sizes should help to eliminate those wobbly decorative lines in favour of bold artistic strokes.

Back on the outside terrace the tourist coaches dropped people off for Las Vistas and El Camisón beaches as I browsed the menus for the listing of coffees, teas (traditional and herbal), hot chocolate and smoothies. If you’re trying to resist sweet filling cakes there are plenty of other snacks; from carrot cake to croissants, toast, donuts and, if your resistnce fails, just go for a death by chocolate. Butterfly and upside down cakes, sprinklings of hundreds of thousands and bright green icing, I could feel aunties legacy prowling in my memory. Tooled up with a few of the kits from So Sweet, the baking bonanza could have a whole new lease of life.
