The Best Supermarkets for Value on Tenerife

Mon, February 6th, 2012 - By Jack Montgomery

You know the drill; you’re staying self catering and you arrive at your apartment in Tenerife, gasping for a cup of tea… or a beer. There’s often a small supermarket in or near the apartment complex. You set off pronto to stock up on some beer, wine, water, bread, coffee, milk, butter, ham and cheese etc.

Ten minutes later you’ve got the gear… but your wallet feels as though it’s just been mugged and you’ve still got exclamation marks flying around inside your head at being charged €1.35 for a thimble sized bottle of water.

Small supermarkets near apartment complexes are incredibly convenient, they’re just not always very good value.

The best places for one-stop shopping are Tenerife’s supermarket chains which aren’t really that much different from their UK equivalents – if you ignore the skinned rabbits, hanging legs of jamon and bizarre looking creatures at the fish counter.

Many of the brands might not be familiar, but a lot of products will be. Take a Spanish phrase book just to be sure; my father in law ended up trying to fry sausages in vinegar after a ‘mistranslation’. However, you can find goodies like McVitie’s Biscuits and Robertson’s Jam in the bigger Canarian supermarkets.

These supermarket chains are now found across Tenerife, giving visitors to purpose built resorts a much wider and purse friendly selection. Here are the key names to look out for.

Hiper Dino
There are over 50 branches on Tenerife. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in Santa Cruz, Costa del Silencio, Playa de las Américas, Adeje, El Médano or Puerto de la Cruz, the chances are you’ll be near one of these well stocked and good value supermarkets.

Another decent supermarket with a good selection of products at low prices. There are Mercadonas in resort areas like Playa de la Arena, Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Puerto de la Cruz. They’re also widespread across the rest of Tenerife from La Orotava to Las Galletas.

Al Campo
One of the biggest and best value supermarkets on Tenerife and my favourite. You can buy just about anything here but there are only two on Tenerife; one in La Laguna and the other in La Orotava.

A similar set up to Al Campo and also with only two stores at Santa Cruz and Santa Maria del Mar.

This familiar name to Northern European visitors has proved very popular on Tenerife with its basic layout and dirt cheap prices. Branches closest to popular tourist areas at Chafiras, Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz.

Iceland, Hiper Trebol and Alteza
Other good supermarkets to look out for are Alteza (very similar in price and products to Mercadona) and Hiper Trebol (similar to Hiper Dino). Anyone who just must have familiar brands should try Iceland (Los Cristianos, Playa de las Amèricas and Chafiras).

Finally, there is one supermarket I personally avoid due to many of its prices being much higher than the names above; Spar. It’s handy for recognisable brands but you’ll pay through the nose.

Most supermarkets are open from 9am till around 9pm daily (some close on a Sunday) with Al Campo and Carrefour staying open till 10pm.

Do you know when the new Iceland will open near the Aquapark? Also I hear it is going to be very small. Thanks.

Hi Jack, above is really useful. Would you happen to know if any of the supermarkets sell oat or rice milk? My little boy is allergic and its the only milk he can have.
    Many thanks

Hi, we are arriving next saturday evening and with 3 children to feed I’m a little concerned as I’ve been told supermarkets are closed on sundays. Are there any open on sundays as I’ll need to stock up.

  5. Tony says:

Sorry, I should have said, we’re just outside Adeje. 🙂

  6. Hi Tony, I’m not sure exactly where you’re going to be but there are some supermarkets open on Sundays. HyperDino and HiperTrebol both open so if you’ve got one of those in easy distance you’re home and dry. You’ll also find small shops/general stores in the resorts which open on Sundays.
