Where to Stay for a Merry Christmas on Tenerife

Wed, December 5th, 2012 - By Jack Montgomery

There are people who get a buzz out of sitting in T-shirts and shorts in the warm sunshine overlooking a sandy scene with a cool beer in their hand, sighing ‘can you believe this is Christmas Day?’

Then there are others who think that being able to dip their toes in the sea without running the risk of frostbite at Christmas is all well and good but miss that warm and fuzzy festive spirit.

Christmas in Puerto de la Cruz

We regularly say that Tenerife offers different holiday experiences for a variety of travelling tastes and Christmas is no different. On Tenerife you can enjoy Christmas on the beach, stroll through quaint streets illuminated by magical Christmas lights, have a right old British Christmas Eve knees up, get teary eyed at Christmas carol concerts and even build a snowman.

You just have to know where to stay to find the Christmas on Tenerife that suits you.

A British Christmas Eve Party Atmosphere
Christmas Eve in the traditional parts of Tenerife is a bit of a damp squib. Even in the popular resort of Puerto de la Cruz it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see tumble-weed blowing through the streets by 10pm as everyone has gone home to pig out on the big Nochebuena family meal. On the other hand, the British pubs and live music bars around Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje and Golf del Sur put on special Christmas programmes where you can belt out Slade and Mariah till the reindeers come home.

Christmas Carols, Nativity Scenes & Christmas Eve Mass
If a more traditional Christmassy feel is more important then it has to be one of the older Canarian towns. Puerto de la Cruz mixes traditional with all the trimmings of a holiday resort. Xmas decorations in picturesque plazas enchant; there’s a funfair at the harbour; children from the local brass band play carols for holiday spends; there are lovely churches galore to experience an emotional Misa del Gallo (midnight mass on Christmas Eve) and fascinating belén displays (detailed nativity scenes) tucked away in colonial courtyards. La Orotava and Garachico also deliver in the traditional Christmas stakes.

Christmas in Santa Cruz

I Like the Street Lights
Streets lit up by sparkling fairy lights add to the whole festive feel. Santa Cruz, La Laguna, La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz are best for Christmas lights but parts of Costa Adeje like Plaza del Duque are coming up on the rails with some sophisticated Xmas displays.

Turkey and Trimmings
Many traditional towns can be a let down for finding a restaurant that serves the big turkey feast. Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Costa del Silencio and Los Gigantes are the places to seek out a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Christmas Fun
There are packed Christmas programmes of events in every part of Tenerife during Christmas, most advertised only in Spanish. Wherever you stay check out the local cultural centre to be sure not to miss out on the best.

Build a Snowman
There’s only one place for that, Mount Teide.

Sunbathe on Christmas Day
As long as the weather gods haven’t woken up with a moody hangover, you can sunbathe at any resort on Tenerife on Christmas Day.

¡Feliz Navidad!
