Brace yourself for the hectic run in to the festive season, Tenerife will build the excitement steadily with a diverse range of events aimed at all tastes and ages.
THE CANARIAN FOLK FESTIVAL kicks the month off with a slight shuffle to this long running cultural special. At Las Galletas Rambla on Thursday 3 December, Las Americas Golden mile on Friday 4 December, and Plaza del Pescadora, Los Cristianos on Saturday 5 December, food stalls will serve the best of local products from 5 pm, and traditional Canarian music and dancing will take over from 8 pm. This pattern will be repeated through until Saturday 26 March 2016.
PEPPA PIG’S CHILDRENS SHOW comes to the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos on Sunday 6 December with shows at 4 pm and 6 pm. It’s a Spanish show, the title La Busqueda del Tesoro (the search for treasure) hints at some pirate adventures with all the usual gang. Tickets are from 19 euros online or the box office at the Cultural Centre and Auditorio Café.
MOSCOW BALLET For three nights the acclaimed Moscow Ballet will be performing in Tenerife. Teatro Guimera in Santa Cruz is the venue for Monday 7 December with Swan Lake (Lago de los Cisnes) then on Tuesday 8 December it’s The Nutcracker (Casanueces) both shows start at 8.30 pm with tickets at 29 or 38 euros. On Wednesday 9 December the ballet tiptoes south to perform The Nutcracker at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos at 8.30 pm. Tickets are €38 from the above website or at the Auditorio box office.
A SPIRITUAL TRIBUTE TO BB KING with the CHICAGO MASS CHOIR arrives at the Teatro Leal, La Laguna on Monday 7 & Tuesday 8 December, both at 8 pm. Tickets range from €12 to €18, the theatre is steeped in history and has a classic design to deliver stunning acoustics. Book online
WALK FOR LIFE – Join in this Sunday morning beachfront stroll on 13 December and you can help this annual breast cancer fundraiser. Thousands of local and holiday makers of all nationalities will meet up for the 10.30 am start from the Magma Congress Centre just below Siam Park. The 4.8 km route will pour down to the promenade at Playa de Las Americas and then along the front to Los Cristianos and the finish point outside the Cultural Centre.
A traditional Canarian drum band will set the rhythm for the walk and there will be live music at the finish at around 1 pm. Most walkers will be wearing pink in some form, there will be special pink merchandise on sale at the start and donation points. It’s a great chance to see more of Tenerife South and make new friends while supporting this good cause.
SANTA LUCIA – One of the plus points of being in such a multi cultural resort like Los Cristianos is enjoying different traditions. Santa Lucia is a wonderful pre christmas celebration of light that takes place on 13 December at the church in the centre of Los Cristianos from 8 pm. Shimmering white and silver costumes, candles, and hymns make this a great sight and the church doors are open onto the plaza so everyone can enjoy the spectacle.
CHRISTMAS DAY CONCERT – A wonderful tradition in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra under conductor Michael Nesterowicz presents classical and popular musical magic from 9 pm on the dockside for a free concert. Thousands will gather in front of the giant stage and it’s all rounded off with a midnight firework display.
SISTER ACT was a smash hit film but then became a Broadway musical success and now this Spanish touring version sets up its convent at the Santa Cruz Auditorium from 29 December to 4 January. Shows are on 29 & 30 December at 8.30 pm; 1 January at 7 pm; 2 January at 6 pm and 10 pm; 3 January at 4.30 pm and 8.30 pm; and finally on the 4 January at 7 pm. Tickets range from €25 euros to €60 in the majestic white wave venue overlooking the ocean.
