Sky Experience Gives A Birds Eye View Of Tenerife

Fri, February 8th, 2013 - By Colin

Leaning over the airplane passenger next to you and peering through a small square of double safety glass may confirm your arrival above Tenerife, but the glare and a dig in the ribs may be the most memorable part of it. To get a closer, comfortable aerial view, Sky Experience in Adeje gives an informed, relaxing choice of four routes from the beaches to the barrancos, the resorts to the rural, and nature’s best handiwork.

The American Robinson R44 helicopter is a sleek, four seater and I felt like a VIP as the pilot guided me and answered questions in English via a headset. Helidream Canarias have drawn on six years of experience through their parent company in Barcelona. Here’s a bit of mechanical pedigree for you: the Robinson R44 did a 36,000 mile around-the-world trip in 97 days in 1997 to enter the record books, and Jay Kay uses his to maintain his rock star image.

Like a living map the coast opened up as we purred up west passing over La Caleta, Playa Paraiso, Callao Salvaje and Playa San Juan on the way to Los Gigantes. Rising up to 500 metres was the perfect level to make out fine detail below and then to soar up and over the giant cliffs to see Mount Teide and the volcanic lava fields spreading out.

Clusters of villages clung to the hillsides, Tamaimo and Santiago del Teide looked tranquil as the main roads wrapped themselves around the hills above them. This was a 50 km trip of just under 30 minutes, taking the southern Costa and Barranco version I could have seen the tourist hot spots of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. For longer trips with a sea view lunch stop, there is also the beautiful north west corner of Buenavista del Norte or the pine forests and valleys of the Volcan Teide tour with close-up views of the volcano.

I remembered part way through the flight that I was expecting to feel a little nervous. I’m not sure if that melted away during the pre-flight safety video or as I belted myself into my comfy seat. It wasn’t a still day by any means when I flew but the helicopter made light work of it. My camera had a steady platform and Helidream have a lavish DVD with music on sale showing highlights of all the trips.

All the one dimensional clichés about Tenerife are soon put into perspective on these trips as contrasts unfold on a grand scale. There can’t be a more enjoyable way to see so much of Tenerife and it’s suited to all ages and abilities.
