If you’re like me, having a wow factor with your hotel room is a huge bonus when you arrive at a place for the first time. And if I don’t get that wow simply on opening the door, the first thing I do is go to the window and open the curtains. For me, a room with a view forgives a great many other shortfalls.
If you want a window onto a world of beauty when you come to Tenerife, here are six hotel room views that have impressed me.
Although there are better hotels in terms of service, décor and even food, the one thing that the Parador Cañadas Del Teide has got that nowhere else can match is its position. The only hotel within the crater of Teide National Park, regardless of which room you have, the view from your window will be nothing less than out of this world. And for the bonus ball, the view is just as good after dark when the clarity of the sky puts on a breathtaking show and not a karaoke microphone in sight.
Few would disagree that Los Gigantes has the best location of any resort on the island and yet, if you stay within the resort itself, you barely get to see those incredible cliffs. The best way to view them in all their glory is from the Hotel Barceló Santiago in Puerto de Santiago. Push the boat out for a corner suite and you get La Gomera thrown in too for a double dose of epic scenery.
Ocean views are indisputably hypnotic but there’s nothing like a hub of activity to keep you glued to the glass and the Arona Gran Hotel has a grandstand position over the comings and goings of Los Cristianos. The higher the floor, the better the vantage point and you can happily while away hours watching the ferries coming and going and the constant flow of holidaymakers along the promenade.
Speaking of vantage points…the Las Aguilas Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz is set on a volcanic mound high above the resort giving epic views over the town, the north coast and the ocean. With apartment-sized rooms, glamorous gardens and pools and some of the best hotel food on the island, it’s not just the views that entice guests to return year after year.
Book a sea view room at the El Medano Hotel and you get oodles of ocean with the iconic silhouette of Montaña Roja along an endless shoreline of golden sand. Throw the rainbow sails of wind surfers and kite surfers into the mix and you’ve got a uniquely El Médano view to send your retinas into whoops of delight.
Quiet peace and reflection are more the order of the day, and night, with a balcony view over the splendour of the La Orotava Valley. And nobody does that better than the Hotel Botánico in Puerto. Specialising in pampering its guests from head to toe, when you’ve been pummelled, wined and dined, look outside your room just to confirm you really are in Paradise.
