Which Resort on Tenerife Would Suit You Best?

Fri, June 17th, 2011 - By Jack Montgomery

It’s a very important question to ask before you travel to Tenerife because we’re all different and what our likes and dislikes are vary enormously. One person’s nirvana is another’s nightmare. Travel agents don’t always help the situation. I’ve seen a resort on Tenerife that was purpose built a couple of decades ago described as a quaint little fishing village by one high street travel agent.

Without a bit of inside knowledge to help make things easier for you, it’s far too easy to go wrong. So to help you choose the ideal holiday destination for you, here is the first part of our brief guide to which of Tenerife’s resorts would suit you.

Best Tenerife Resort for Families – Torviscas
Most of Tenerife’s main resorts have something to offer families, but I’d choose somewhere like  Torviscas in Costa Adeje because it offers the choice of a number of beaches, water sports, boat trips from Puerto Colón and isn’t far from attractions like Siam Park, Aqualand and Aguilas Jungle Park.

Best Tenerife Resort for Party Animals – Playa de las Américas
If you’re young, free and single then Playa de las Américas is still the place to party on Tenerife. But knowing where to stay is crucial. Party central – aka Veronicas – actually lies on the border with Costa Adeje. Staying in San Eugenio and Torviscas can put you as close to the action as some accommodation in Las Américas.

Best Resort for Traditional Tenerife – Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife, has much more of a traditional Canarian atmosphere than the other big  resorts. The partying here comes in the form of traditional fiestas of which there are loads throughout the year. Entertainment is aimed first and foremost at the local population and the numerous restaurants are mainly traditional Canarian or Spanish. In the south, Los Cristianos still retains some of its fishing village roots.

Best Resort for Couples – Playa de las Américas
Las Américas tends to get tagged as party central but the area around the Safari Commercial Centre is one of the most cosmopolitan in Tenerife with two superb beaches, a great choice of international restaurants and live music bars. The night life, although lively, isn’t as frantic as Veronica’s or as low key as the El Duque end of Costa Adeje.

Best Tenerife Resort for Extreme Sports – El Médano
El Médano is heaven for windsurfers and kite-boarders. Long sandy beaches and a surf dude vibe gives the small resort near the airport a young and hip atmosphere. Nightlife isn’t bouncing but there are some trendy bars and very nice tapas bars and restaurants.

Best Tenerife Resort for a Tranquil Holiday – South West Tenerife
The three resorts of Los Gigantes, Puerto Santiago and Playa de la Arena in the south west of Tenerife have a gentle charm and although there are plenty of bars and restaurants, the nocturnal scene is very low key (everything winds down around midnight). There’s not a lot to do except enjoy the warm sun, which shines the most on this part of Tenerife, the tranquil atmosphere and the glorious sunsets.

In part two we’ll let you know which Tenerife resorts are best for luxury, urban grooves, historic atmosphere, rural beauty and uniquely boutique.
