The Best Places to See a Show on Tenerife

Wed, December 19th, 2012 - By Jack Montgomery

Most of the time when you read about Tenerife’s great nightlife, the focus will be on the bars and clubs around Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje. But there’s much, much more to Tenerife’s lively nocturnal scene.

What if you want something more than a karaoke bar or a sound-alike act? Suppose you fancy catching a show or a concert during your holiday?

Wherever you are staying on Tenerife, the chances are you won’t be too far away from a pretty cool venue with local, Spanish and international names performing jazz, classical, modern dance, ballet and rock.

These are some of our favourite places to see a show or concert on Tenerife.

Teatro Leal, La Laguna, Tenerife

Teatro Leal, La Laguna
Tenerife’s former capital city of La Laguna boasts a classically old school, flamboyant theatre built in 1917. It’s the sort of place where opera glasses would seem right at home, even though the acts on stage are much more contemporary.

Tenerife Auditorium, Santa Cruz
There are a few places to get a cultural hit in Santa Cruz, Tenerife’s capital. Top of the list is the sleek and chic Auditorium which looks stunning in the sunshine and irresistible after dark. It’s played host to many international stars over the years and during the Christmas period is the setting for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – The Musical (28 December till 6 January).

Castillo San Felipe, Puerto de la Cruz

Castillo San Felipe, Puerto de la Cruz
There are a few cultural venues in Puerto de la Cruz but the most interesting is the old fort, the Castillo San Felipe, beside the black sands of Playa Jardín. The Castillo is a good setting for jazz and classical performances and during the festive season it’s a particularly atmospheric place for Christmas carol concerts.

Teobalda Power, La Orotava
La Orotava doesn’t have many tourists pounding its streets after dark, but guests at the Rural Hotel Victoria and the town’s other small hotels are in a location with a rich cultural agenda throughout the year. The Teobalda Power Auditorium is the focus of a lot of the events that take place – from traditional folk music to jazz and from plays to the fiesta celebrating the end of the year.

Infanta Leonor, Los Cristianos
The Infanta Leonor has quickly established itself as a popular venue for a wide range of shows and concerts in one of the south’s most popular resorts, Los Cristianos. Its Christmas programme includes gospel, folklore, magic and ballet.

Piramide de arona, Playa de las Americas

Magma and Pirámide de Arona, Playa de las Américas
Finally, what of Playa de las Américas with its reputation as the karaoke kingdom of the island? With the modernistic Magma Art & Congress Centre and the Viva Las Vegas vibe at the Pirámide de Arona, Tenerife’s best known tourist resort has a duo of eye-catching venues in which to see shows that are a cut above what many people expect. Currently, History – The Musical at Magma is an extravaganza that charts popular sounds through the ages whilst Evolución at the Pirámide de Arona is a typical Carmen Mota blend of a two act story with Spanish and Flamenco dance during it’s first act before morphing into more contemporary moves to familiar international songs during the second act.
