Five Places to Enjoy a Sundowner on Tenerife

Mon, August 8th, 2011 - By Andrea Montgomery

There can be few things more romantic than watching the sunset from some gorgeous location with a chilled drink in front of you, especially when you’re watching that sunset in the warmth of a Tenerife night. Here is my pick of just five of Tenerife’s best sunset spots.

Mirador Archipenque – Los Gigantes
Mirador Archipenque occupies a grandstand position on the road that winds up the mountain out of Los Gigantes towards Santiago Del Teide. The reward for the climb is panoramic views over the Acantilados de Los Gigantes (Cliffs of the Giants) as the sunset stains them crimson and lets the dye run down over the surface of the marina. With a good selection of drinks and snacks all reasonably priced, it’s a prime sunset spot for the budget conscious.

Casa Pancho – Playa de La Arena
Moving south, the pretty little family resort of Playa de La Arena has one of the nicest, natural beaches on the island which is where you’ll find Casa Pancho. After a hard day working on the tan, head to one of Pancho’s tables to sink a cold beer and watch palm silhouetted sun set behind the island of La Gomera. If the first goes down well (a common occurrence), order another and try their delicious tapas while the little ones build their last sandcastle of the day. A good family sundown spot.

Marlín  – Playa San Juan
One of Tenerife’s most stylish resorts which manages to marry upmarket development with traditional Tenerife, Playa de San Juan is a cut above the rest when it comes to places to enjoy the sunset. Tread the über cool boardwalk all the way to the old lime kiln and climb to enjoy a sunset in solitude, or sink into one of the chairs of the Merlin café and order the sundowner of your choice. If the romance goes to your head, book a table at their incredible seafood restaurant to round off the evening. Sunset for the romantics and the gourmets.

Chiringuito – Playa de Las Américas
The beach bar of the Hotel Villa Cortes in Playa de Las Américas which sits right on the endless promenade that links La Caleta to Los Cristianos, is my absolute favourite spot for a sundowner. Oozing style and comfort and offering five star, uninterrupted views over the sunset, this is the place to see and be seen. Don the Dolce and Gabbanas, order a mojito or a bellini and sit back to enjoy the show. This is definitely one for the sunset style police.

San Telmo – Los Cristianos
The golden expanse of Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos is the perfect spot to spend a long, hot day. And when the golden globe decides to bid adios, the bars and restaurants of San Telmo are ready to take up the sundowner gauntlet. With open terraces overlooking the beach and funky, chill out sounds providing the sound track, choose from any one of the venues along the row to enjoy the sunset party-style.
