Be Pink And Proud For The Walk Of Life

Fri, November 22nd, 2013 - By Colin

Be prepared to be raised from your Tenerife sun bed on the morning of Sunday 15th December by the rhythm of drums and the cheers of a large crowd. It’s the annual Walk For Life in aid of breast cancer and it will be threading its way past the hotels and apartments of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos.

Although tinged with sadness for many losses, it is also a joyous celebration of life and people’s fighting spirit and you are all invited to join in. It may be as little as throwing a few coins in the collecting buckets or you could join in for part or all of the walk – pink is the colour of the morning but even your most garish holiday shirts and sloppy sandals are welcome.

The walk starts off at 10.30am from the Magma Arts & Congress Centre, next to the Playa de Las Americas station for the Titsa public buses. There will be entertainment there, and at the finish point of Plaza Nuevo Mar at Las Vistas beach. In between, the walk will pass down Avenida Rafael Puig before turning off at Hotel Conquistador for the sea front promenade. The pace will be gentle and the company multi-national and very friendly,

Two Spanish cancer charities will be receiving the money, the AECC and AMATE but raising awareness is as important as the cash. Last year they raised a whopping 16,000 euros and are determined to beat that.

Hundreds of people take part every year, some of the costumes will have you tickled pink and it’s a very worthwhile way to have a little peek at other people’s hotels as you pass. There is normally a swimming group as well that take a wide arc to span the route, and local entertainers from the bars give up their time to help entertain the pink wave.

The distance is around 4.5 kms and should take a leisurely two hours at most – perfect timing to enjoy a Sunday lunch and a cold drink.
