Music Festivals on Tenerife, Santa Blues 2011

Fri, June 3rd, 2011 - By Jack Montgomery

The tribute acts found in numerous bars around Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje are good fun for sure and the traditional Canarian folk and Latino music played at fiestas in traditional towns like La Orotava, Garachico, La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz offer a taste of Tenerife’s culture. But occasionally it’s good for the soul to have a bit of diversity. Throughout the year there are various music festivals on Tenerife ranging from jazz and classical to indie rock, dance and world music.

One of my favourites, Santa Blues, takes place this month. Santa Blues is, as the name suggests, a blues festival held in Tenerife’s capital Santa Cruz. The festival features some of the biggest names on the blues scene and past years have seen the likes of Ike Turner, Buddy Guy and, one of my favourites, Robert Cray add a sultry soundtrack to summer nights that are already balmy.

Santa Blues takes place at the end of June every year and can either be held over three consecutive nights or three consecutive weekends. Every year I scour the internet for news about when it’s happening and who’s in the line-up. It’s a job that takes dedication and guile. One year I learned directly from a band, The Deans (great young Irish blues band by the way) that they were appearing long before any publicity material was on the scene. Some years I’ve reached the point where I’ve been convinced that Santa Blues wasn’t going to take place only for details to appear online days before the opening gig.

The good news is that this year details of dates and line up have been posted early enough for us to be able share them well in advance with blues fans and people who generally enjoy good live music. Santa Blues 2011 will take place from the 23rd to 25th June. As with previous years’ festivals, there are two bands playing each night and performances start at 9pm.

This year’s line up includes Tenerife based Lightnin’ Blues and the Andy J. Forest Band from New Orleans on Thursday night; Emerging Sound (Italy) and Ohio bluesters Red House Blues with Blue Lou Marini on Friday night and, finishing off the festival, is Three Bones (Spain) and Mississippi’s Zac Harmen on Saturday.

The location for Santa Blues is the picturesque little square below the Iglesia de la Concepción in the Noría district of town (about a 10 minute walk from the bus station). There are excellent bars and restaurants in the charming historic streets around this part of the Santa Cruz, so it’s ideally placed for preparing for some soulful sounds by enjoying a taste of the city’s finest food in one of its most stylish areas.

Oh, did I mention one of the most amazing thing about Santa Blues? Entrance is completely free. How cool is that?
