Were those ten pins laughing at me? Well my first few bowls tickled them rather than send them scuttling but once into my rhythm I was knocking nine over regularly. It was after 8 pm at Mega Bowl in Fañabe and Cosmic Bowling time, that means glowing balls, subdued disco lighting, and rock music.
If you haven’t swung your arm for a few years you will be pleased to find how easy it all is now, an electronic screen updates the scores automatically and even suggests coaching tips to adjust your stance and release. Drinks can be sipped at the seating area by each of the ten lanes and everything is geared up for all ages to have some competitive fun. Families and large groups are well catered for with special party time menus with food, drink, balloons and banners from €11.50 for 90 minutes game time.
There were spare lanes when I called in but normally it’s best to book in advance, maybe some were holding off until after the midweek football. They could have included their favourite sports action in their night out. The Mega Rock lounge looking out onto the lanes has four big screens and two giant ones, goes on after midnight, and has plenty of drink promotions.
Bowling offers mean the more you play the more you save. The basic €5.50 a game for adults and €4.50 for 12’s and under drops to €9.50 and €6.50 for two games. Friday evening from 6 pm is a good time to go along with some friends as it’s unlimited bowling for €10 euros a person and free nachos if you have at least four people to a lane.
Back in the Mega Rock sports lounge there were plenty of combinations of burgers, hot dogs, wraps, and salad from the American Diner restaurant. You can tell a lot about a Tenerife venue by how many of the local population use it, Mega Bowl hosts lots of corporate and charity events for the major holiday and excursion companies. There’s no other ten pin bowling venues in Tenerife and it’s easy to get to from resorts like Los Gigantes, Costa Adeje, Playa Paraiso, and Callao Salvaje.
My bowling style was getting better with each throw and it’s good fun. There are different weighted balls to suit everyone and the automatic racking up and ball return means the game comes to you. With air conditioning throughout you can take a breather from those hotter beach days and you don’t have to wait for a rainy day. For me that loud crack of the pins pitching over was a very satisfying sound and rather addictive.
