Los Gigantes Beach to Re-open in 2011

A sunny seaside holiday resort without a beach is a bit like a sweet shop without any sweets, but that’s exactly the position that Tenerife’s south west resort of Los Gigantes has been in for more than a year.

Just over twelve months ago, at the end of October 2009, rocks falling from the cliffs that lend the resort its name tragically killed two sunbathers on Los Guíos beach. Prior to the accident there had been concerns about the safety of the beach in the area below the cliffs and part of the beach had been taped off in a bid to deter sunbathing in the most dangerous area. Unfortunately these measures didn’t prove to be sufficient to avoid disaster.

Following the tragedy the beach was completely closed to the public. It was a step that was essential to ensure public safety, but one that had a serious impact on businesses in the area as well as being a major disappointment to visitors to one of Tenerife’s favourite holiday resorts.
Since then, with the closest sandy beach to Los Gigantes being a bit of a trek away at Puerto Santiago or at the blue flag cove at Play de la Arena, holidaymakers have had to make do with sunbathing at their hotel or apartments’ swimming pools or the lido beside the harbour.

The good news for anyone planning to holiday in Los Gigantes in 2011 is that this week the local council announced that steps were being finally taken to make the beach safe again. Work to implement safety measures on the cliffs above the beach is due to begin to in January 2011 and is expected to last around two and a half months.

As long as the work goes according to schedule (this is Tenerife where projects being completed on time are something of a rarity) it means that by April 2011 Los Gigantes could have its beach back and visitors will once again be able to stretch out on Los Guíos beach to enjoy one of the most stunning views on Tenerife.
