Choosing the right accommodation for your holiday can be as essential as choosing the right resort and can make or break a holiday. Some people book into an all-inclusive hotel and don’t walk out the door again until it’s time to return to the airport. Others rarely see the inside of their accommodation, returning only to shower, change and sleep. Whatever holiday you choose to have and whatever your budget, there’s a style of accommodation on Tenerife to suit you.
Apartments and Aparthotels
Extremely popular on Tenerife, apartments give you the privacy of your own space combined with complete control over your own schedule. Many apartments on the island are located within hotel complexes in the major resort areas of Playa de Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Del Silencio and give you more space than a hotel room while also giving you access to the facilities of the hotel such as the breakfast buffet. Look for hotels with apartamentos or an aparthotel which signifies the accommodation is a pick and mix blend of self catering and hotel.
You’ll also find privately owned apartments available for rent in residential blocks across the island but it’s worth being aware that most are not licensed and that the authorities have been clamping down in recent years with owners facing large fines for allowing short term holiday lets without a license. Just be aware of possible safety issues such as no lifeguard at the pool.
Usually run by and for backpackers or surfers, hostels are at the cheapest end of the Tenerife market (under €15 a night) and offer dormitory style bedrooms (some that sleep up to 50 people although 6 to 10 is more usual) and shared bathrooms with the emphasis on communal areas. Don’t expect frills, do expect to make friends and have fun. There aren’t many hostels on Tenerife but you’ll find them located in off the beaten track destinations like the Anaga Mountains as well as in the heart of Playa de Las Américas.
Tenerife is currently seeing sizeable growth in its rural tourism and there are beautiful rural hotels opening up all over the island. But for those who want their independence as well as the beauty of Tenerife away from the resorts, there are hundreds of lovely rural houses which are completely self catering and are usually set in idyllic locations. The houses range from luxurious villas to basic cottages and are frequently isolated so a car is essential. Perfect for hikers.
None of the Canary Islands do hotels better than Tenerife. From the five star luxury of Costa Adeje and the rise of all-inclusive hotels, to some of Europe’s finest spa hotels, green facing golf hotels and the emergent rural hotels scenes, Tenerife has them all.
The ultimate getaway accommodation, villas are the last word in luxury and you’ll find plenty on Tenerife to choose from. Private pools, terraces, DVD players and four poster beds all feature and some even come with their own butler who’ll make breakfast for you. Top of the range are Royal Garden Villas, Las Villas at Bahía del Duque and those within the Gran Melia Palacio de Isora, to name just a few.
