Five Cool Tenerife Bars

Wed, May 25th, 2011 - By Andrea Montgomery

There are more bars on Tenerife than you can shake a stick at – although quite why you would want to shake a stick at a bar escapes me. Nevertheless, whether it’s euro-a-pint and plastic chaired or tobacco stained, tapas and vino, Tenerife has bars to suit all tastes. But for those who like their Martini to be served with an olive, a twist of lemon and lashing of seriously smooth style, here’s our pick of the coolest bars in Tenerife’s top five resort areas.
Salut!

El Faro Chill Art – Costa Adeje
Standing guard over the marina of Puerto Colón in Torviscas, the lighthouse of El Faro may not cast a beam over the Atlantic but it’s still a shining light in the Costa Adeje night sky. Exhibiting all the style and poise of a supermodel, the only thing more cool than the décor is the clientèle. With regular live concerts and party nights, this is the place to see and be seen.

Magic Bar Lounge – Playa De Las Américas
You could be forgiven for thinking that the taxi has detoured to Playa de Las Américas via neighbouring North Africa when it drops you outside the flaming torch, Bedouin tent entrance to the Magic Bar Lounge. Jaw-dropping décor in crimson and gold provides the setting for plush, low sofas and reclining chairs adorned with sumptuous silk cushions. Not a venue for the wallet-shy, a bottle of Dorada here will set you back five euros.

Mestizo – Los Cristianos
What Mestizo Bar lacks in size it makes up for in ambience and laid back style. All African art, bamboo and wicker, this friendly bar serves excellent coffee and chilled beers on its Colonial-style terrace by day. When the rest of Los Cristianos has gone to bed with a mug of hot chocolate, and young clubbers have hit the San Telmo bars, the smooth vibes of Mestizo beckon those of us whose tastes run more to a nice bottle of red than to vodka and Red Bull.

Bar Blanco – Puerto de la Cruz
Urban chic meets rock attitude in this live music venue and chill out terrace in the north Tenerife resort of Puerto de la Cruz. Downstairs, silver walls, neon blue and dancing lights provide the canvas for local bands to ply their art. Head out to the three level courtyard behind to find soft seating, low lighting and a rooftop bar.

Escondida – Alcalá
In the village of Alcalá which adjoins the über stylish Gran Melia Palacio Hotel, the Escondida restaurant lounge bar stands out from its fishing village location, literally and figuratively. Décor is Thai themed with billowing drapes, wood carvings, coloured glass, and palms in bronze planters, all ensconced behind picture windows overlooking the harbour. A fraction of the price of its southern neighbours, the atmosphere is as laid back as its surroundings.
