A Closer Look at Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz

My opinion: One of the most underrated hotels on Tenerife, where Colonial character, contemporary style and five star comfort come at four star prices. An haute cuisine restaurant is the cherry on this city cake.

Location, location: On the Santa Cruz Sculpture Trail on a corner of Las Ramblas pedestrian boulevard, right opposite the beautiful Parque García Sanabria and in pleasant stroll distance of the city’s plethora of galleries, plazas, museums, shops, bars and restaurants.

Rooms and Grounds: After being acquired by Iberostar, the faded grandeur of the city’s only five star hotel was given a multi-euro makeover. Reopening in 2011, many of the hotel’s beautiful Colonial features have been retained and have been teamed up with ultra chic contemporary style. Wide open spaces make the most of the light that floods in from the central courtyard. Walls have been kept mainly pristine white in order to showcase striking prints of the island’s iconic landscapes.

A black and white theme dominates throughout the lobby, halls and bedrooms with retro style, leather furnishings and flowing, ceiling to floor silk curtains. Bedrooms have enormous double beds of oversleep-inducing comfort, flat screen TV, free WiFi and retro style furnishings. The basic doubles have the kind of floor space you can expect from a city hotel and an upgrade to a deluxe will give you more floor space and a view over the Ramblas or the gardens.

Outside, the chic theme continues with perfectly manicured botanical gardens, a lawn dotted with palm trees and a glossy, travel magazine-style pool area with wooden decking. The hotel’s ever growing collection of terrapins in their glass and tiled pool provide endless photographic material and fascination for guests while the luxurious sun loungers soak up the sheltered warmth of the garden’s sun trap position.

Facilities: A  state of the art gymnasium lets you pump and pedal your way to fitness while gazing onto the lawns and gardens, and a fabulous spa offers the full spectrum of treatments and all the usual steam and heat rooms and an interesting collection of showers, including a Scottish shower.

There is an indoor swimming pool in the spa centre as well as the solar heated outdoor pool. The hotel has fast, free WiFi throughout.

Food: Operating a show kitchen which hosts culinary events featuring top class chefs from across Spain, the Los Menceyes restaurant is one of Santa Cruz‘ best dining spots. When I stayed there I was lucky enough to attend a tasting dinner prepared by a Michelin star chef but the hotel’s own Chef Juan Carlos Clemente has a deserved reputation for excellence. In the light of its gastronomic pedigree, I have to admit to being a little underwhelmed with the buffet breakfast choices though. The gym-side Los Laureles restaurant specialises in fine food for the health and weight conscious.

Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey is ideal for: singles, business, couples, families with teenagers.
