My opinion: A fabulous rural hotel, hidden away in the heart of San Miguel but still in easy driving distance of El Médano and the southern resorts. Friendly and unusual, this is the ideal hotel for anyone who wants to get away from the busy resorts and who likes character and authenticity with their home comforts.
Location, location: Hidden behind high sandstone walls in the very heart of the village of San Miguel in the hills above Golf Del Sur. Located in the old quarter, a two minute stroll from the little Casa del Capitán Museum and five minutes from the church, it’s perfectly placed for restaurants and for exploring on foot.
Rooms and Grounds: The hotel has been converted from a mansion and a farmhouse, both dating from the 17th century, and has been carefully restored to retain the original features but with modern convenience like air conditioning for hot days and heating for chilly winter nights. Every bedroom has its own unique character and appearance with period furniture and lighting but have been enhanced with design elements that fit easily yet add that touch of luxury and comfort. You could find yourself sleeping in the hen house, the stable or the goat pen. We had a room off the flat roof in the old mansion and had masses of floor space, enough to house two rocking chairs and a coffee table in front of the TV. The en suite bathrooms are all individually designed to bring a contemporary style to period fittings and original tiles.
The hotel is set within an enclosed courtyard and walled garden with lots of little patios and corners in which to enjoy the flowers and the tranquillity and every room has its own terrace, balcony or space outside in which to soak up the sun.
Facilities: The large sun terrace on the flat roof has views right down to the coast and is the perfect spot to top up the tan or enjoy a sunset cocktail. Off the roof terrace is a Jacuzzi and a sauna but best of all is an underground thermal bath beneath the garden where the water is constantly heated to 33°C. The perfect place to relax tired muscles and restore energy levels. The hotel has WiFi but the signal’s quite weak in the bedrooms and is best accessed from the bar, a hardship if ever there was one…
Food: The garden terrace is where you can enjoy breakfast, weather permitting. There’s a large lounge area for relaxation and an honesty bar where you can get coffee, tea and drinks all day. Breakfast is quite a small selection of cold meats, cheeses, cereals, fruit, cakes and bread but the cook brings a different hot dish to the table each morning, we had a very tasty scrambled eggs with peppers one morning and an omelette the next.
