My opinion: A grand hotel whose Oriental good looks sit spectacularly well amongst the palm trees of the north of Tenerife and whose five stars stem from excellent service and attention to detail.
Location, location: At the foot of the fertile La Orotava Valley where the benign presence of Spain’s highest mountain dominates the horizon, Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect base for exploring the best of Tenerife’s cultural highs. A ten minute drive or thirty minute walk from the coast, Hotel Botánico is for peace, luxury and tranquillity seekers; families will prefer to be nearer the beach.
Rooms and Grounds: A little old fashioned in décor for my taste, there’s nothing ‘wow’ about the bedrooms, unless you can afford one of their penthouse suites with their expansive terraces and Jacuzzi pools, but what they lack in inspiration they make up for in comfort, free wifi and views to take your breath away.
The gardens at the Hotel Botánico are one of its crown jewels and give the nearby Botanical Gardens a run for their money. A beautifully landscaped, tropical paradise wends its way around a Monet-esque mini lake complete with its own black swan; across a wooden bridge, through palm walkways and back to the elegant swimming pool. Just strolling its length is a guaranteed de-stress experience.
Facilities: The second jewel in Hotel Botánico’s crown is its unparalleled Oriental Spa Garden where Thailand meets Tenerife and they live happily ever after. If you’ve never tried a spa treatment before, put your body in their hands and let them take you to a happy place where the years slide back and you emerge feeling ten years younger. Try their rhassoul wrap and your skin will actually look ten years younger too…I’m thinking of having a coat made from it 🙂
Food: The breakfast buffet is a lesson in self restraint as every conceivable item you could wish to eat or drink first thing in the morning is present, and all to top quality standards of freshness and taste. From fresh smoothies to iced doughnuts and muesli to full English, play your cards right and you won’t need to eat for the rest of the day. Try traditional Spanish and Canarian dishes at La Parrilla where I can highly recommend the sea bass and potato in a vanilla compote. Lovers of Thai and Oriental cuisine will find themselves dissatisfied with every other restaurant outside Asia once they’ve given themselves over to the delights of the Oriental.
Hotel Botánico is ideal for: couples.
