My opinion: A quirky and friendly little boutique, rural hotel set on a hill with expansive views to the south coast. The perfect base for lovers of quiet and tranquillity and for walkers who want to explore Vilaflor and Teide National Park. It’s also a good place to stay if you want to get to the Teide cable car ahead of the crowds.
Location, location: The Hotel Alta Montaña is in the alpine village of Vilaflor, high above the south east coast of Tenerife. At this height, winter nights are a lot colder than at the coast but you also get the lion’s share of warm, sunny days and star studded nights.
Rooms and Grounds: Set on a vantage point above the village, you have to walk or drive up a steep road to arrive at the gardens, terraces and paths of the hotel. The large, central house is where you’ll find reception, lounge, dining room and bar and is a bright, welcoming space with flower motifs painted on the walls and multi-coloured cushions to sink into. Surrounding the buildings and rooms are lovely, terraced gardens with little paths and quiet terraces on which to sit and enjoy your surroundings. The gardens feature native and endemic Tenerife plants which are labelled for information, and quirky little characters and sayings dotted within the foliage. But the pièce de résistance of this friendly little hotel is the gorgeous terrace that overlooks the village and the volcanic landscape all the way to El Médano on the coast below. This is the perfect spot for a sunny breakfast, a pre-dinner G&T or a post-walk beer.
The hotel has just 15 rooms, 12 of them in two rows, one above the house, the other below, and two larger rooms in the main building. The garden rooms are chalet-style with their own little patio outside the door with table and chairs where you can catch the afternoon sun while you drink in the views. Beds are comfy, there’s an enormous radiator on the wall which keeps the room cosy even in the coldest of Vilaflor nights, and there’s a generous sized en suite with a powerful shower and lashings of hot water.
Facilities: There’s a small, outside swimming pool with views down to the coast (closed in bad weather) and there’s a small gym in the basement of the main house. The lounge and bar in the main building are a great place in which to relax, read, watch TV or use the wifi and there’s a small bar to add to the conviviality. There are family bikes for hire.
Food: The dining room is where you’ll find the self service buffet breakfast and where you can book to enjoy a home cooked dinner of traditional Tenerife cooking prepared with fresh, organic ingredients from the garden.
Hotel Alta Montaña is ideal for: singles, couples, hikers, mountain bikers and star gazers.
