Callao Salvaje Beach, The Wait Is Nearly Over

How long is a piece of string? Residents and visitors to Callao Salvaje in Costa Adeje have had a similar unfathomable question on their minds for years but an answer is coming. Playa Ajabo is finally undergoing a transformation from a basic shingle beach with no washing, changing or refreshment facilities to a sandy, well serviced, family friendly bathing spot on Tenerife’s west coast.

Callao Salvaje emerged in the 1990’s from a small village to become a large purpose  built resort and a thriving community of ex pat settlers but its isolated location has meant it has had to fight for equal billing with the established holiday stop offs like Los Gigantes around 20 minutes drive to the north west and Los Cristianos a similar distance to the south.

The beach project has been dangled tantalisingly in front of Callao Salvaje for a decade but in December 2010 a ceremony was held to mark the turning of the first stones. As at early September 2011 the new sand was heaped high amid heavy machinery, workers were pitching in after several stoppages and you could almost see locals itching to get down to the water’s edge. The builders’ board cheekily says the work will take seven months but doesn’t name a start or finish date, Christmas 2011 would be a nice present.

Besides the sand, landscaping will allow for plenty of plants and flowers to add some colour, the concrete flower beds have already been filled with dirt. A round building at the back of the beach will house toilets and a flat roof area will be a good spot for a food and drink kiosk and a few seats. The bay is quite well protected by nature’s design and walkways will lead down from the main bus stops on one side and a row of cafés and bars on the other side.

Callao Salvaje has been steadily updating. The roundabout that leads off the main TF82 ring road is a blaze of colour these days, clearly marked and widened to allow coaches easy access. At the bottom of the main road down through Callao Salvaje a two tier terrace is a restful place to look out to the island of La Gomera. The beach cannot come soon enough but after many delays the towels and flip flops are patiently waiting in their cupboards.
