Buy and Bite, Great Places to Shop and Lunch on Tenerife

Fri, June 22nd, 2012 - By Andrea Montgomery

Tenerife is a great place to combine two of life’s greatest pleasures (well, mine anyway) shopping and eating. All over the island you’ll find Commercial Centres (CCs) filled to their tills with places to part company with your cash and they’re also surprisingly good venues to take the weight off the shopping bags over lunch.

CC Gran Sur, Costa Adeje

CC Gran Sur
You’ll find the Gran Sur shopping centre just above the motorway slip road in Fañabe, an easy commute from the hotels and apartments of Playa de Las Américas and Costa Adeje.   I usually make a bee line for Mary Paz which has great shoe and sandal bargains all year and Women’s Secret to check out their latest undies and swimwear.

CC Gran Sur, Costa Adeje

The whole place has WiFi so you can tweet while you shop and there’s a huge range of places to grab a bite and enjoy the sunny terraces overlooking the, err, motorway. The Mexican, Padrisimo, is good for a snack, as too is Dona which has a great selection of bocadillos and scrumptious cakes.

CC La Laguna
The place where many people who live in the south come to do their weekly grocery shopping at the Al Campo hyper store and where you’ll find familiar household names like Ikea and Decathlon, Santa Maria del Mar in La Laguna has one of the biggest concentrations of shops outside of Santa Cruz.

It’s also where you’ll find an entire village of bars, snack bars and restaurants at road level, opposite the pedestrian flyover. If you’ve never tried the wonderful Venezuelan snack of arepas on Tenerife, take the opportunity to pop to El Negro Mario, on the Al Campo floor, to try out their carne mechada arepas (spicy, shredded beef) – greasy and delicious.

CC Meridiano, Santa Cruz

CC Meridiano
Although I love strolling the streets around Calle Castillo, there’s no denying the attraction of the CC Meridiano, seven floors of Santa Cruz retail therapy. Bright, shiny and new it’s a great place to do your Christmas shopping or to treat yourself to a real credit card blow-out. Head to the top floor for fashion.

Lizarran tapas bar, CC Meridiano, Santa Cruz

One of our favourite lunch venues in CC Meridiano is Lizarran, a chic tapas restaurant which not only has a dizzying choice of hot and cold tapas but also brings freshly cooked montaditos (small ‘bites’ of open sandwiches) to your table for you to accept or refuse at will.

CC La Villa
Upmarket La Villa in La Orotava, on the border of Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos, is my local and favourite shopping centre. Designed along the lines of Manchester’s Trafford Centre, doing the food shop at Al Campo without heading off on a clothes shop is a weekly test of willpower.

Shopping highlights for me are Stradivarius, Zara and Bijou Brigitte whereas Jack heads to Pull & Bear and the second hand DVD shop. Any excuse will do to pop into La Oficina for one of their home made burgers – thick, meaty and herby burgers which, at just €2.30 a go are not only the best burgers I’ve eaten on Tenerife but are also ridiculously affordable.
