Five Beach-side Tenerife Restaurants for Lunch in the Sun

Wed, March 21st, 2012 - By Andrea Montgomery

When all you want to do is pull on enough clothes to stay the right side of decent and flip flop your way to somewhere with a tasty menu, chilled beer and a terrace overlooking your sunbed – here are five suggestions for the perfect place in the sun…

Los Faroles, Puerto de la Cruz
Located half way between Puerto de la Cruz and its neighbouring barrio of Punta Brava, you don’t even have to leave the sand to get to Los Faroles which is positioned right on Playa Jardin. As traditional as 25 family members packed into a 4X4 for a Sunday trip to Teide National Park, Los Faroles has a huge indoor dining area and a tropically floral outside courtyard where you can enjoy paella and rice specialities with a distinctly fishy bent. ((0034) 922 384 616; open daily 11am to 6pm)

Tapas Y Mas, Playa de la Arena
Perfectly positioned with a grandstand view over the popular family beach of Playa de la Arena from its terrace, Tapas y Mas does exactly what it says in the name – tapas and more. Half a dozen steps off the sand land you on the spacious, sunny terrace where you’ll find one of the largest tapas menus I’ve seen. At just €3 a portion, you can afford to try all sorts of goodies over the course of a leisurely lunch. And if you don’t consider lots of small dishes to be a proper meal at all, there are plenty of chips-with-everything options on the ‘Y Mas’ menu to keep everyone in the family happy. Here’s a hot tip – their lomo (tender, barbecued pork slices) bocadillos are to die for..or at least, to leave your sunbed for.

The Beach Club, Playa de Las Americas
Part of the Mediterranean Palace Hotel, The Beach Bar is the ultimate chiringuito (beach bar) which sits above Playa El Camisón in Playa de Las Américas. This stylish terrace on the beach is perfect for scoffing burger and chips while watching the posers parade on the beach before you. At dusk, the place morphs into cocktail city where you can sip your tequila sunrise over the sunset. Not the cheapest beach bar you’ll ever eat at, but possibly one of the nicest positioned (open daily 11am to 8pm).

La Surfería, Los Realejos
One of my absolute favourite beachside restaurants in its former life as Bar La Terraza, now under new management and re-named, La Surfería sits just above El Socorro surfer’s beach on the coast of Los Realejos. A small outside, sun trap of a terrace houses a handful of tables and umbrellas from which to watch the body-boarders and surfers at play, cold beer or ice cream in hand. Inside, the open-sided dining room overlooks the beach and the blue infinity beyond. As well as fresh fish and seafood, creative salads and snacks, the restaurant doubles as a small art gallery for local artists, has surf boards for hire and is even a wifi zone so you can surf and err, surf (open daily 11am to 8pm).

Playa Chica, El Médano
Playa Chica in El Médano has possibly the best tapas in the south of Tenerife in toe splashing proximity to the ocean. Admittedly it’s not located on one of the most popular surfeit of beaches in the resort, instead it’s on a small patch of sand used more by locals than visitors. One of three small tapas bars/restaurants that line Paseo Marcial García, each of whose terraces back onto the sea, Playa Chica is my favourite. Here you’ll find tapas that strays from the usual with a daily selection of savouries which occasionally include some of the best albóndigas (meatballs) on the planet and dangerously addictive stuffed peppers.
