Bar Café Hesperides , Icod de Los Vinos

You couldn’t ask for a more central or more convenient stop off point when calling into Icod de Los Vinos than Bar Café Hesperides. It’s situated just below the Ayuntamiento (council) building at the main shopping crossroads just a few moments walk from the Milenario Drago tree and visitor’s centre. That would be a good enough reason in itself to pop in but I always find its friendly and informal atmosphere attracts locals and visitors alike.

The cobbled area outside is a natural sun trap and is scattered with tables and sun shades, which is just as well as it has quite a limited amount of seating inside. But the layout gives bar users and eaters plenty of space not to intrude on each other. The tapas offers change regularly but I was in need of something more filling after a busy few hours exploring nearby Playa San Marcos.

I went for the churros pescado, chips and salad and it was plentiful and pleasing. The large bites of fish in light batter were soft and tasty and joined with a good helping of chips and fresh salad and a large crusty bread roll. The main doors are nearly always open out onto the converging back streets to allow the sun in, which helps to create a larger looking space, and from my table I could see the stream of small independent shops and the refurbished Hotel San Agustin.

Having seen some of their homemade cakes and pastries before, my eyes were drawn to a giant slab of bizcocho cake behind the bar near the open kitchen area so I thought I really ought to try some. My slice was more like a doorstep, the sponge cake was firm and delicious and went well with the coffee I had to follow my dinner cola. The lot came to just under 10 euros, pretty typical for a good filling meal at Hesperides.

The menus are in a choice of languages and contain fruit drinks and milk shakes, a strawberry shake made its mark on my taste buds on a previous visit. The tapas is always generous and again great value.

With the main bus station for the region a few minutes walk away Icod is well used by people going on to Los Realejos, Garachico, or to visit Cuevo del Viento or ARTlandya so it’s good to know that as well as the more specialist restaurants and tea rooms there is somewhere to enjoy some well prepared meals.

Icod is a lovely local town often over looked by visitors who only come to spend 20 minutes looking at the tree that it is more famous for.

Only a short bus ride from bustling Puerto de la Cruz, it is well worth spending half a day, wondering amongst its shopping streets and enjoying the excellent local food.

One of my favourite towns in Tenerife.
