The Best Areas for Lively Nightlife on Tenerife

Ask many British visitors where’s the best area for nightlife on Tenerife and the answer would almost certainly be Playa de las Américas. Ask them to name a resort where the nocturnal scene is relatively low-key and they might reply Puerto de la Cruz.

In both cases they wouldn’t exactly be 100% right.

For holidaymakers who enjoy a sing-along to Robbie, Rod Stewart, The Drifters, Oasis and The Kings of Leon, Playa de las Américas (around Parque La Paz, the Patch and Starcos) and parts of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are the ideal holiday destinations to soak up the sun and then party the night away to familiar sounds. If you’re into clubbing and the sort of bars that were made infamous on TV shows like Tenerife Uncovered, then Veronicas on the border of Las Américas and Costa Adeje is nightlife heaven…if you’re not it might be more a case of nightlife hell.

But everyone already knows that. However, a buzzing nightlife isn’t confined to the Playa de las Américas of this world. What a lot of people forget is that the Canarian residents on Tenerife enjoy live music and clubbing as well and as most of them live away from the southern resorts, there’s an after dark parallel universe on Tenerife consisting of cool bars and stylish clubs with live music and top DJs.

Puerto de la Cruz is promoted as being a suitable resort for people seeking a more tranquil holiday away from the bright lights and exuberant nightlife of the bigger southern resorts. And up until about midnight that’s exactly the face that it shows. At weekends the town bursts into life after the clock strikes 12 as young and young-ish dressed to kill Canarios from around the northern slopes flood in an out of sleek and slinky bars where there are some cracking bands and sizzling Latino sounds. By 3am on a Saturday night, parts of the town are busier than in daylight hours as people move from the late bars to the club scene along Avda Familia Bethencourt y Molina (formerly Avda Generalisimo) which also is the location the biggest choice of gay bars and clubs on Tenerife. It’s very much a Canarian scene and might not suit everyone, but for visitors looking for a vibrant local atmosphere, everybody is welcome.

Ultimately the places with some of the jazziest nocturnal scenes has to be Tenerife’s capital, Santa Cruz and to a lesser extent the former capital La Laguna. La Laguna is a university city so bouncing bars and lots of good live music comes as standard and some of the best bars are found clustered around Calle Dr Zamenhoff.

Santa Cruz, like any city, boasts the most festivals and concert venues with theatres, cinemas and the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martin attracting international names as well as top Spanish and Latino musicians that are probably less well known to British audiences. The bar and club scene is equally buzzing especially in the Noria district near the TEA centre and on Avenida Anaga. Those who venture into Tenerife’s friendly capital will find it a difficult choice to pick which chic bar to frequent – still, the capital parties into the wee small hours so plenty of time to try out a few.
