Flat green bowls is a great British tradition but unfortunately so is trying to guess which UK summer days will serve up the weather to play it. Banish those worries from your mind at the Winter Gardens in Golf Del Sur. They have a top quality complex where eight lanes (or rinks) are complemented by the Rendevous Bar & Bistro with outside seating and floodlights ensure the games go on late into the evening.
It’s not just about experienced players who can coax the woods to curl like a Beckham free kick, although Teide Bowls Club regularly shines against visiting teams, the complex is a perfect setting to take up the sport at any age. Every Wednesday they have a fun two hour starter’s session including coaching, a game, bowls and shoe hire; plus lunch and a glass of sangria, all for just 20 euros.
I thought it might be mega serious with hushed tones and tense silences, instead there was the relaxed chatter of friends sharing a sport that requires technical skill and good judgement. The social side is helped along by the large covered terrace behind one end of the rink, groups were gathered around tables with cold drinks as they encouraged their friends and swapped tips. The downstairs reception rents out flat shoes and bowls and the Rendevous Bar and Bistro serves drinks and dinners downstairs all day and a fuller menu and cabaret upstairs after 6pm, maybe that’s why friends and family of players are just as keen to make a visit.
Winter Gardens has hosted bowls for over a decade and has a loyal following of locals and regular Tenerife holiday makers. It’s a popular part of the island sandwiched between El Medano and Amarilla Golf with the San Miguel marina a few minutes stroll away. Looking out from the corner of the rinks the sea view is sure to calm the most nervous of players.
Green fees start at seven euros per person per hour but the more sessions you book the more you save. Monthly membership is a big winner with holiday makers, 10 sessions would cost 80 euros, that’s from 9am to 11.15 or 1.30 to 3.45 pm.
For those not familiar with the game, the idea is to bowl your woods down the length of the rink to finish as close to the smaller jack as possible, and you should see how much they can make those bowls curl to split an opponents pack. Each rink has a large scoreboard so it’s easy to keep track of how things are progressing. It’s best to book your playing time in advance to avoid a wait for your turn to impress.
